Ice Manufacturing Company to Save $7,500 Annually with Energy Efficiency Upgrades

Connecticut-based Dee Zee Ice LLC, which markets its products under the Diamond Ice brand, has announced its recent energy efficiency improvements will save the company more than $7,500 annually and nearly $115,000 over the lifetime use of the equipment along with saving 11.4 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity.

The ice manufacturing company partnered with Eversource, an energy provider in New England, which developed a set of standards for Dee Zee’s energy efficiency programs. The set of standards included switching to LED lighting, among other things.

“We work in the cold – one room is 18 degrees, one is 22, one is in the 30s – and the old bulbs used to take minutes to warm up,” said Dee Zee Ice plant manager Rob Holmes. “The LEDs now come on very quickly, which is a welcome change for our staff.”

Pennsylvania towns are saving millions by teaming up to buy LED lights.

Lansdale Borough officials had talked for years about replacing all the borough’s outdoor lights with more energy-efficient LEDs. One thing was stopping them: money.

“It’s just that it’s quite an investment to try to pay for,” said Andy Krauss, electric superintendent of the Montgomery County town.

So Lansdale’s practice over the last several years was to wait for streetlights to malfunction and replace them one by one with LED lights, which meant uneven lighting.

But in a few months, the streetlights, traffic lights, lighting in parks and parking lots, and other exterior light fixtures the borough owns will all be LED, thanks to an unusual partnership with neighboring towns that could serve as a national model for municipalities, according to the National League of Cities.
